MercyMe Cuts and Runs With Shure Wireless

GREENVILLE, TX, November 6, 2008 — Put something under enough pressure and you never know what will squeeze out. This is especially true in the case of MercyMe, the multiple Dove Award-winning, Grammy-nominated Christian rock band that famously went into production of All That Is Within Me, its latest release, with nary a note written and emerged from the studio three weeks later with a collection of beautifully crafted songs.

"We actually started cramming for this project in a Sunday school building right here in our hometown of Greenville," MercyMe guitarist Mike Scheuchzer admits. "We were hammering down chords they weren't really songs yet. The goal was to just get some guitar licks down. Bart [MercyMe frontman Bart Millard] would take this home every night and just try to come up with an idea for a song."

"God With Us," the album's first single, came out of these first writing sessions as a praise anthem of sorts, setting the direction for other songs that followed. "We wanted songs that the crowd could sing along with us when we played live," Scheuchzer adds. "Songs that would be sung in churches long after we were done doing MercyMe. It was really exciting to see the album heading in this direction."

Equally exhilarating for the band was the tour following the record's release that brought the group together playing in the round, teaming fellow guitarists Scheuchzer and Barry Graul up onstage using Shure UHF-R® wireless.

"We could run around anywhere in the arena," Graul relates, citing one of his favorite aspects of cutting the cord.

"On this tour especially," Scheuchzer adds riffing off of the thought just like an antiphonal exchange shared with Graul onstage. "To be able to keep the crowd behind us entertained and included in the show...I mean I just couldn't have done it on a wire. I'd have needed a 50-foot cable, but then my guitar tone's gone. It's been so freeing to just be able to run around."

"And on the technical side, we can retain our guitar tone with these Shure wireless units," Graul points out.

"I've had my share of systems that were not from Shure," Scheuchzer recalls. "Actually, the first time I met Barry we were at a festival in Texas, and one of those not-so-well-built systems had just gone out on me for the fifth time that year. With our Shure bodypacks, I've never had a problem."

With touring plans laid out before them all the way until June 2009, MercyMe will stay on the road playing in churches, auditoriums, performing arts centers, and even on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship sailing out of Port Cape Canaveral, Florida on May 6 of next year.
